MUDDERS AGAIN TO FORE TRACK CONDITIONS AT LAT0NIA SUDDENLY CHANGED BY HEAVY DOWNPOUR. Horses Served by Muddy Going Heavily Backed and Layers Are Given a Drubbing — Reversals Lead to Comment. Cincinnati. O.. June 1. — The Latonia track was muddy today as the result of a heavy rain which fell last night. Weather cbndltiona. however, were flue today and the attendance was falrlv good. Twenty-one layers posted hIiIs and sustained the heaviest losses of the present meeting, all the winners lieing substantially backed. Notwithstanding the bad goiug. the contests were spirited and finishes close. The best race was the fourth. In which some fairly useful selling platers were engi.ged. Na.lzu managed to win but was closely pressed by Colonel Blue. Nadzus victory this afternoon was the third straight since his advent iu these parts. Alice was well supported by the sharpshooters to take Ills - measure, but after being a contending factor for seven furlongs, dropiied out of it. and Stone Street beat her for third inoii.v. The victory of iypsy King in tlie fifth race .it-casi.iiied adverse coniminl. as In his previous effort he was disgracefully beaten. The excuse advanced for his showing on that occasion is Unit an incompetent jockey subjected him to repeated interference. Gypsy King was fortunate in escaping a jam soon after the start, in which Rara Avis suffered greatly. There was an altercation during tin- running of tin-race between jockeys Warren on La Kavettu and Page on tlie winner as a result of the earlv inter ference. Warren slashed Page with his whip, for which the judges promptlv fined him 0. Cvpsv King was bid up 00 over his entered pric- of 00. but was retained. After repeated efforts Jack Straw managed to win a purse and incidentally a wager for his owner when he beat a good band of juvenile selling plater* in the second race. Slew-foot was favorite in" the race, but. showing a dislike for heavy weight, was never a serious factor. Salian taking second place from John McClure. In addition to winning with Gvpsv King. J. U. Wainwright took down a purse with his fillv. Inferno Jueen. which beat eleven other maidens of her sex In the opening dash. All Red found conditions ex actly to Lis liking in the third, iu which be l ".r Marbles and Righteasy to the finish. Bucket Brigade, another of the winners, showed vast improvement over his previous out. Jockey Troxler left this afternoon for New York to ride Wartield in the Belmont Stakes to be run tomorrow. Troxler will receive no and expenses as a riding fee. with an additional bonus of MM if he succeeds in winning. The drubbing the layers got this afternoon will probably cause a thinning of their ranks tomorrow. Jockeys Page and K. Martin each r.ide a pair of winners during the afternoon.
