PRESIDENT PARKERSONS PROTEST. New Orleans. La.. June 1. — The reference of President W. S. Parkerson of the Louisiana Bar Ass orb Hon to the passage of tin- Locke anti-race track taw in his annual report to the organization over which he presides, was couched in the following language: "I cannot agree with those good people who would abolish tlie risking of a slake upon a race, because to abolish the risk of a stake is to abolish the race Itself, and I cannot see what harm can come from witnessing the contest for superiority betweeu two good horses. If are are to cut out good sport, good wine, good living, what a dull old place, this earth would become. It looks to me as if Satan is to have the better of the argument if he is to have all tin-pleasure, and man to go around with a long face. Indeed, followed to their logical conclusion, such laws will wi|M- out the flee agency of the individual -and make him an automaton. I cannot give my assent to sueli legislation. I believe that the iieople are being lashed to madness, into a sort of religious frenzy, and that every citizen who can consider the matter calmly, should do his best to cheek the wild career. Education, not legislation, will make a sober, industrious people."
