MONTREAL MEETING OPENS AUSPICIOUSLY. Attendance Large Despite Unfavorable Weather-Jack Parker Successful in Feature Event. Montreal. One.. June 5. — The third annual spring meeting of the Montreal Jockey Club began today under circumstances that augur well for its success. Despite adverse climatic conditions a large crowd turned out and long before the horses were called to the post for the oiiening event, the grandstand was tilled. Besides the Kings Plate, there was offered a feature In the St. Lawrence Handicap. The Kings Plate proved easy lor Rolicrt lrazers S. S. B.. which came from behind in the stretch and won iu a canter. The other fixture furnished a stirring contest in which Jack Parker managed to stall off Guy Fishers determined stretch bid and lasted to win by a scant length. The start, which was none too good, affected the result. The held was sent away to a walk up break. Jack Parker had the best of it and Guy Fisher was last to leave the post. This disadvantage proved too great for Guy Fisher to overcome, although he made a gallant effort. Favorites scored in live races, but as four of them were at odds on. the layers did not greatly suffer. Jockey Goldstein rode two winners ami Hinchcliffe. another of Captain Presgraves riders, had the mount on Wild Iirc. winner of the closing dash. Mauv of the regulars remained over hi Toronto for the closing day. It is expected that fifteen carloads of horses will ! o shipped from Toronto tomorrow, and that from now on the fields will average much larger. Steeplechase jockey Ernest llclder had the mount on Victoria. Which finished third in the Kings Plate. Just before the ticld m.nlc the turn into the home stretch, it looked as if Victoria might win. hut she fired iu the stretch. Hcidcr got a nasty-looking fall in the Pit I llll I bill when Touchwood fell at the thirteenth fence and tolled over his rider, who was bruised to such an extent that he will not be able lo ride for a few days. The Canadian Racing Associations granted a license to lackey M. Preston la-t night, and the bag had the mount on C. W. Burt in the inaugural dash. Among the stables that got In from Woodbine this morning were those of . II. Smith. C. C. Smitlison O. Turek. T. S. Childs. 0. Bowman. F. L. Wood and G. A. Scott. Jockey Reed arrived from New York and Goldstein. Walsh. Karl Havncs and Hinchcliffe came over from Toronto.
