LATONIA YIELDS SURPRISES DIFFICULT TRACK BLAMED FOB UPSETS THAT ENRICHED THE LAYERS. Merrick, with Which Bookmakers Took Liberties Because of Distance He Was Asked to Go. Among Winners at Short Odds. Cincinnati. O.. June IS. — Todays raping was of ordinary quality and the patronage was in keeping with the card. The rough traek was blamed for the frequent upsets that eaine with profit to the sixte.-u la"vers in line. The most pretentious race of the afternoon was the fourth, in which The Peer. The Minks and Mellowmiiit were the starters. Thev finished in the order named. The Peer was at all times the favorite and won cuminaiidingly. The going seemed to exactly suit him. The Minks made a game effort to overtake the winner in the stretch. The defeat of King Solomon in the owning race was a stunner to favorite backers. The colt was considered almost a certainty to land the purse, but a bad ride and a sluggish beginning accounted fo -his failure to overtake Zephyr, which beat Ulm by a narrow margin. Merrick continued1 his winning streak when he led Jupiter Joe to the finish in the second race. The layers were inclined to lie libera] with their odds, in the theory that Merriek might not last the mile journey. He held Jupiter Joe safe at all stages, although tiring somewhat near the end. Meadowgrass made a show of her opponents in the third, in which race Anne McGee was the favorite. The former Corrigan tllly showed the most earlv speed, but tired badly in the stretch. Warner Griswell furnished a surprise by an easily achieved victory over a fair band of sprinting platers in the fifth. He was away poorly, but went to the leaders with a rush and came away cantering in tb« stretch. Frequent crowding was responsible for the failure of Deuce and Boserrian to land any portion of the purse in this race. They were the choices. L. A. fella took another purse when Irrigator easilv scored in the closing race. Irrigator was the medium of a betting coup and cost the books heavy losses. The poor showiug of Bucket Brigade, a rapidly receding opening favorite, occasioned adverse comment. John W. Schorr was among todays visitors. He is en route from Memphis to New York, where he has horses in charge of A. Simons. He will remain here a few days. Burner Schrelber has dlstlftsed of Alice George to J. R. Wainwright. The nlly was shipped to I Iain ilton with the Lusadcr consignment. Oiainbala will be a starter in the Fort Brie Derby. to be run July 5. The colt will be shipped to New York on Sunday nest in charge of Roy Cassaday. Jockeys K. Martin and Ilutuagel were each tlned ." by the starter for disobedience at the post.
