FAYETTE WORKS WELL FOR DERBY. Madden s Disappointing Three-Year-Old Will Be Again Backed to Beat Joe Madden. New York. June IS. — Tomorrows metropolitan race-goers will probably ! e treated to what is a rare spectacle on race courses in the east — a walk over. Only one entry has lieeu made for the Enipir-State Steeplechase. Suc-h a contingency was fop* seen by the resourceful clerk of the course, hence .111 •■xtra race was added. Fayette will lie given another chance to redeem himself in the Brooklyn I erby and v. ill again be backi-d to beat Joe Madden, which thrice lias beaten him decisively since the opening of the eastern racing season. Fayette has again worked sensationally fast in private. It is slisiieeted that J. E. Maditens grand-looking three year-old may lie a sulker. and with the possibility of his running kindly and up to his work the outcome is in some quarters considered uncertain. Aside from the two stakes referred to the card is attractive. Many horsemen believe that Effendis race yesterday gives him a chance in the Suburban. With an iiuiM st of but eighty-seven pounds, he will line up with horses of the Alfred Noble class, and if he ran ever get to the front he will take his field along at a good clip. He has not the class of some of the entries, but his starting will add some interesf to the race. But for the fact that Hilarious is in the race Hie Suburban of this year would be considered an open contest. An unconfirmed rumor is in circulation that Jockey Walter Millers application for a license to ride in England has been denied by the Jockey Club stewards. Hammerless was yesterday bid up from ,300 to ,000 by Joe Marrone, but was retained with the customary advance. The announcement was made at Gravesend today that King Cobalt would be shipped to Canada at once.
