j CONDENSED HISTORY OF THE TREMONT STAKES * ■ + When Fayette won the Tremont Stakes last year he won 2,500 for his owner, John E. Madden. This year tl e owner of the winner will receive ,925. the contrast being no greater than that between the general condition of New York racing of early last year and the present time. The event was named In honor 01 a black son of Virgil that in 1880 won thirteen races as a two-year -old and never knew defeat. He belonged to Dwyer Bros, and was a regular whirlwind of a racer. Inlueklly he broke down when a two-year-old, so his racing record was routined to that one splendid year.
