JOCKEY BUTWELL IS IK DISFAVOR. Riders Impudent Reply Costs Him Position with James R. Keene Stable. New York. June 18. — The substitution of Vckey Seville 011 Maskotte in the Gazelle Stakes for But-well, who sM been riding the Keeue horses all spring, iias caused no end of comment among local race goers. When trainer Kowe was asked the reason for the change in riders, he replied: "You had better ask Mr. Keene." And then he smiled. The fact that Mr. Keene had censured Butwell for Ms careless handling of Hilarious in the Carlton1 Stakes on Saturday seemed to be the answer to the question. Butwell nearly lost the race by pulling Hilarious to almost a walk in the final fifty yards of the Carlton. New York. June 18. — It transpires that jockey Bntw.Il was dismissed from the employ of James It. Keene because he made an impudent reply when take* to task by his employer for pulling up on Hilarious and jeopardizing victory In the Carlton Stakes. There is reason for believing that Scoville will continue to have the mounts on Mr. Keenes horses. When Mr. Rowe. trainer for the Keene stable, was asked about the change from Hut well to Scoville. he said: "It was Mr. Keene., orders. He is the owner of the horses and can choose what rider lie thinks best. Mr. Keene has no contract on Butwell and had no agreement witli any rider."
