T T" CONDENSED HISTORY OF THE EMPIRE STATE STEEPLECHASE 1* + The Empire State Steeplechase, sadly reduced in value, will be run for the ninth time this afternoon. The reduction of values in eastern racing has struck the owners of steeplechasers more heavily than it has any other class of owners and it is lean picking indeed for them. Last year, when this race was won bv Thistledale. it returned ,840 to the winner. This year, if very horse entered should start, it would only net the winner 00. Still, the owners are enduring their privations gallantly in hope of better days to come. Tlie record of the race is: Year. First. Age. Jockeys. Wt. Second. Age. Wt. Third. Age. Wt. Val. Time. 1901 Passe Partoiit ."»» Hueston.,147 Geo. Keene 6 186 Dr. Eirbberg 5152 ,650 4:52 1902 Miss Mitchell 6 Mara. .142 Plato II 155 J. Mct;ibben7.164 1.650 4:58- 1903 The Rag. Cavalier 4 G.
