DAY OF UPSETS AT FORT ERIE. F. J. Pons Brings Off Betting Coup on Ben Douhle Favorite Players Hard Hit. Buffalo, N. Y.. July 15. F. J. Pons Ben Double furnished the chief surprise to the public at tort Erie this afternoon by romping home in advance of his opponents in the second race, after having been backed from a high price of 50 to 1 down to 1; to 1. Nearly all the. layers paid out heavily and the stable connections are reported to have won big sums. . Todays ordinary card brought , frequent upsets and favorite plavers experienced the worst day of the meeting. Upsets began with the opening dash, when King Solomon, the favorite, stumbled at the post as the barrier arose and unseated his rider. King Solomon bad been confidently backed because of his previous good showing. Short Order won, after wearing down Ben K. Sleet. Western Lady, regarded as a likely contender in the race, had her chances spoiled by a poor sendoff, but beat out Bedminster, a recent New York arrival. Phil T. Cliinn attempted a coup with his first-time starter. Judge Lassing, jn the third race, but was unsuccessful, W. J. Youngs Mesmerizer upsetting the plans by taking the Chlun youngster into camp handily. Judge Lassing is a tlasliy looker and may develop into a useful racer with a little more racing experience. Daintv Dame was probably best In the three-quarters sprint, but Howards poor riding contributed to her defeat by Dr. Waldo Brlggs. The improved showing of the Schreiber sprinter may have been due to the fact that ho ran In blinkers today. The victory of Woolwinder was followed by a runup from 00 to ,500. II. L. Thomas doing the bidding in a spirit of retaliation. Thomas claims that 1. H. Wheatcroft. owner of the St. James Stable, was responsible for jockey Shillings action iu leaving the Thomas stable. Lew Marion acting for the St. James Stable, claimed Ceremonius out or the race for ,100. The closing race enabled the Pittsburg delegation, headed bv Frank Hawthorne and 5. W. J. BIssell, to make "a handsome -cleanup on Bed Hussar. Jack Baker will send a consignment of six horses. Including Jeff Bernstein, to Saratoga. Jockev Andy Minder made bis appearance in the saddle this morning on several of the Flzer horses. It was the first time in nearly a year that he had attempted to mount a horse and he claimed after galloping several horses that he felt no 111 effects from the exertion. Minder sustained a bad fracture of Ids right leg at the Fort Erie track last summer while riding Cora Price. J. W. Colts consignment of jumpers will arrive here from New York tomorrow.
