Kidding up of winners In selling races and scrambling for the possession of lieaten horses by the claiming process were some of the features attendant upon Saratoga racing today. Spellbound, brother to a wonderful trio of former turf stars Mesmerist, llatasoo and Jinks--was run up after winning the second race a hundred dollars over his entered selling price of ,000. and was Inflight by the Chelsea Stable. J. I.. McGinuis. the owner, had previously offered to sell the gelding for 1909.sh00 and regarded the trans action witli much satisfaction. The transfer of Spellbound netted him just ,430. including the purse. Intervention by the stewards at, the wind-up of the card again helped McGlnnis. his colt. Captain Swniison, being awarded the sixth race on a foul, after running second to the heavily backed Hen Loyal. Musgrave. on the favorite, rode Captain Swanson too closely for safety, and on jockey Grands complaint. Men Loyal was deprived of a hard-earned victory. Tew anticipated the change and most of the spectators had left the track before the original plaeings were disturbed. It was the most unexpected disqualification that lias occurred on the eastern turf in a period of years. Belleview, winner of the mile and three-sixteenths race, was the second horse during the day that changed hands by the bidding up process. Bcdwells racer defeated a big lield in an uphill race and a big crowd gathered at the judges stand after the tinlsh in anticipation of a run-up. S. C. llildreth started the bidding with an advance of 00 over the 00 entrance price and then retired. J. S. AVard followed him up with an otTer of ,200, and there being no response from the owner, the good six-year-old gelding reverted to A. Weber, the owner of Console, for whom Ward was acting. Subsequently Bcdwcll and C. F. Clark put in claims for Console, and the latter secured the line Sir Dixon tilly because he was entitled to priority under the rules, which specitically provide that the owner of the winner shall have the last consideration in oases of this kind. Withdrawals robbed the opening race of much interest. Rose Queen, Jeanne dArc and Tasley being the conspicuous absentees. Crystal Maid, quoted at xtdii-ou, scored a runaway victory over Amelia May and Kerry Maid. The Pirate of Penzance filly displayed brilliant form in the difficult going am! becomes an interesting factor in the tilly races of the remainder of the season. Joe Rose, favorite in the niile dash, ran as if waterlogged and was badly beaten off. The owner said that the Schreiber-bred colt has been worn out. Ostend was the third and last selling race winner that was coveted by outside parties. Martin Dema-rest advanced him from 00 to ,100 before he retired. Ostends owner bought in the youngster with the customary advance of . Ostend was the medium of the big coup of the afternoon. Jockey Nicol rode Sir John Johnson into defeat in the handicap at one mile. There were only four starters, including Pins and Xeedles, King Sol and Zicnap. The Beverwyek Stables crack, quoted at odds-on, was choked into submission in the first half of the race and fell an easy victim at the end to the persistently placed second choice. Pins ami Xeedles. An unverified report was in circulation tonight to the effect that the cuts sustained by Jack Atkin in his last race may keep him out of training for the next two months. It is asserted that the horse was suffering so much pain in his right hind leg this morning that he was unable to place it on the ground.
