RECORDS Of THIRTY LEADING TRAINERS OF THE DAY : Xext to the speed of the horse, the most potent force in racing is the skill of the patient, untiring and Utile heard of men who act in the capacity of trainers. A horse in the rough and a horse in the highest condition of muscular development are two widely different propositions and the latter condition, so necessary to successful racing, is one that is brought about only by the knowledge of the trainer. Those at the bead of their profession often effect wonderful results with horses that would make no showing in the hands of less competent men. Such trainers as llildreth, Itowe, Madden and Colston have a faculty of i;i:Iikly guaging the varying qualities of different horses that seems almost uncanny, although it is only the result of years of hard work that the public lias little conception of. The trainers of the present day have had no superiors in the past. So far as the present year is concerned. S. C. llildreth is now at the head, pre-eminent success awarding him that position. In the matter of money won by horses under Ills intelligent care he is so far in advance of his competitors that there is no present comparison. Xext to him In that particular is James Howe, who trains the horses in the powerful stable of James It. Keene. II. !. Bedwell, whose remarkable success is one of the marked features of the racing of 1509. comes next, followed in order by Colston, Cliinn. Walker and Madden. When it comes to the matter of number of races won, Iledwcll is almost as much in a class by himself as llildreth is in money won. lie has saddled seventy-nine winners so far and If he keeps on to the end of the year as successfully will have achieved a record. Phil Cliinn is next to him and lias done more than passing well himself. Colston, is third in this class and llildreth fourth, while Jimmy ltowe has no place in it at all.
