The latter ran In forward and persistent pursuit of the pacemaker, finished fast and just failed to get up. Quantico, from a flying start, set the pace for six furlongs and tired finally, but is good. Slichael Beck showed superior early speed and was prominent to tho stretch, but tired and was palpably short. Sententious, away poorly, ran in prominence for half of the journey and retired. Desionmcfs- was - never dangerous. Joo Rose seemed unable to raise a respectable gallop and his race should be thrown out. Ostynd quickly closed up into forward pursuit of the pacemakers, then challenged midway of the stretch nnd got up hi the last stride. Zephyr, excessively urged to overhaul the leader, seemed the winner in the stretch, but succumbed in the final strides and was unlucky. Zacatecas set the pace to the stretch and held on persistently after being headed. Lord Clinton ran well up throughout and was gaining at the end. Slatchfield likes sloppy going, was forwardly placed early aud tired finally. Rowland Otis, away very badly, closed a gap and was going easily at the end. Loco was nearly left. Sloltke had scant chance with a bad start. The winner, entered for 00. was bid up to ,000 by SI. Demarest and bought in. Sir John Johnson made the running under a hard pull, was choked too much from the start and failed when called on in the stretch. Rio Grande drew out quickly and set the pace to the stretch, then held on very gamely in the closing drive and is in bis best form. Slellow-mint held a brief early lead and was reserved forwardly afterwards, but could-never get up again. Nethermost, excessively urged to overhaul the leader in the first half, failed to stay. Sliss Catesby ran well up for the first mile. Lord Stanhope was fl. prominent contender for seven furlongs and quit badly. Okenite was crowded "out at the start. Judge Lassing ran in nearest and persistent pursuit throughout under pressure aud was a game and close up third. Top Notch ran forwardly and gamely all the way. Momus, well up for half of the journey, quit badly iu the stretch. St. Regis showed brief early speed.
