ONLY ONE GREY HORSE TO WIN DERBY. Only one grey horse ever won the English Derby, this being Gustavus, in 1821. but there have been several amongst the placed horses, such as Sir John Lades Chop,- second lu 1781; Lord Granthams Carlo Khan and Grantham,- second in 17S4 and 1785;- Hector, among grey, ran third in 1800; Lord Darlingtons Rahy was second in 1818; Exquisite" made a great tight of it with Frederick In 1S29; and in 1838 Lord George Bentiucks Grey Moniiis, which started first favorite, ran third to the 30-to-l shot. Amato. Of late years the mOrit conspicuous greys have been Lord Zetlands Grey Friars, which disappointed his friends sadly, and the ill-fated Freuch horse. Holocauste, whose tragic end excited the- pity of every persou on the course. One grey filly has won the Oaks, namely. Scotia, in 1S02. but the St. Leger was won by the grey filly Hollandaise 4n 1778.
