TRACK IN BAD CONDITION HEAVY RAINFALL GIVES MUD RUNNERS ANOTHER CHANCE AT WINDSOR. Decision of Yesterdays Program Attended by Upsets That Enable the Layers to Recoup Centre Shot Makes Especially Poor Showing. Detroit. Mich.. August 1G. Heavy rains which fell yesterday and this morning, followed by showeifl tills afternoon, put the Windsor track In bad condition and brought about the withdrawal of thirty-one of the eighty-one horses carded as starters. The attendance was surprisingly large, considering the adverse weather conditions. Twenty-seven layers-operated and profited extensively by the defeats of several of the most heavily backed choices. After the fifth race there wast a miniature deluge, to the accompaniment of wind of almost cyclonic velocity, which for a period threatened to cause a panic. The defeat of i.l"errick and Centre Shot by the suddenly improved Sir EIwarir was one of the greatest surprises of the afternoon. Merricks failure was partially due to J. Reids poor handling. The lxy allowed him to lose much ground, taking the horse wide into the stretch. Centre Shot ran far below her form and ceased to be a serious factor after going a half mile. Smiley Corbett showed his customary turn of high speed, but quit early, as in his previous starts. In the mile dash, Martin Doyle was well fancied to land the purse. He was in forward pursuit of Emperor William until passing the half-mile post, where Harty took him wide, which permitted Mien ael Angela to pass him. .On the stretch turn Harty again fumbled with his lines, but the horse canie with great courage and overhauled Michael Angelo for second place. Emperor William had assumed too great a lead in the first three-quarters to be overtaken and won with plenty In reserve. In the sixth race Golconda. ridden by S. Davis, was favorite, and Nettie Traver the smartly backed good tiling and ultimate winner. Golconda lacked early sliced and was a distant trailer during the earlier stages, hut after going three-quarters he moved up with a rush until Hearing the final furlong, where llrannoii, on Denver Girl, impeded him slightly. In retaliation Davis made a vicious strike at Brannou with his whin. The judges summoned both idcrs before them after the race, suspended Bran-non for the remainder of the meeting for his attempted rough riding, and fined Davis 5 for striking Branuon. Later they supplemented their ruling against Davis by suspension pending further investigation of his handling of Golconda. Lanigan. supiKisedly the best betting proposition of the afternoon, contributed to the woes of favorite backers by failure to get aiiy portion of the purse in the fifth race. Anna L. Daley, making her first start since her California campaign, turned up the , winner over Merry "Gift. Lanigans poor showing was partially due to the fact that he fell lame during the running. El Dorado, a long shot, landed the closing dash in handy fashion from San Primo and Sabado. Ben K. Sleet proved himself a superior mudder by the easy manner in which he disposed of a good band of youngsters in the second race. The opener went to Lumen, which led for the entire distance. Horsemen conversant with Canadian conditions do not take much stock in the reports of opposition by a second turf governing body which is alleged to have obtained a federal charter to operate race tracks in Canada. The contention is made that the charter does not stand for much unless a license to operate is granted 13" the provincial authorities having these matters in charge. Fred Luzader was called to his homo in Kentucky by the death of his mother. Tlie horses comprising1 the string of R. L. Thomas will be shipped to Slieepshead Bay track at the close of the meeting here.
