FIRESTONE LUCKY WINNER DUGANS SKILL ALONE SAVES FORMER CRACK FROM DEFEAT IN EAST. Tins and Needles Takes Turf Stakes in Hard Fought Contest with Arasee Ben Loyal Wins the Autumn Maiden, New York, August 31. With perfect climatic an-.l track conditions prevailing, a crowd of goodly proportions attended the raws at Sheepshead Bay today, despite the unusually light card offered. With the exception of the last race small fields ruled throughout. The Partridge. Turf. Potomac and Autumn, formerly stakes of importance, were features in name only, hilt their running developed keen and interesting contention. The Turf of ,500 far sur-pasM-d the others in value. Its quartet of starters Tins and Needles, Arasee. Iteaucoup and Superstition represented more than average class. The small field maintained close order for a mile, then Superstition retired. A little farther on Ueaucoup. the favorite, succumbed and dropped to the rear, leaving Iins and Needles mid Arasee to light out the issue. The mare, which had pialitied for todays race with an excellent performance in the Saratoga Cup last .Saturday, proved the better stayer of the pair and prevailed in the closing strides. The winner was the extreme outsider in the betting. ,S. C. llildreth scratched King James from the Potomac, the all-aged handicap at one mile, and depended on Firestoue. The former Williams crack scored a lucky victory, Eddie Dugans particularly brilliant horsemanship being the chief contributing factor to his success. Firestone forced the pace from the start. Tony Eonoro ran along with him for three-quarters of a mile and then retired precipitately. Beginning the final quarter the favorite hud established a seemingly safe lead. Midway of the stretch two outsiders. Black Mate and Rock-stone, joined issue and thereafter it was hammer and tongs between the trio. Dugans superior skill and vigor finally turned the scale. The Partridge, which has been won by some good racers in its day. was captured by Glennadeane. Although her opixisition was inconsequential. T. W. OBriens hitherto dlsapixdnting lilly showed a glimpse of her best California form on this occasion. Incidentally she enriched her owner in winning wagers for the first time since she came into his possession. The Autumn Maiden, over the Futurity course, closed the program. :and furnished the best spectacle of the afternoon. A quarter of a mile from the finish it seemed as if the entire field was running abreast. Yet Ben Loyal, the favorite and ultimate winner, actually had an advantage of several lengths over his nearest pursuer. A little farther on. Hamp ton Court came along and forced the leaders to a hard drive. John Hvnes. the old-time trainer, had a success ful day, saddling two winners. Hoyal Vane and Ben Loyal. There lias been some talk of a revision of the present Coney Island Jockey Club program book, but. according to Schuyler Parsons, there is nothing in It. On account of the conditions governing various raws, many owners are debarred from enteiing their horses, hence the paucity of starters. It is reported that jockey Mcoville is in delicate health and has frequent attacks of weakness while riding, that his lungs are affected and that he is subject to hemorrhages. This would explain some ol his lapses from form. Two good riders will leave these parts this evening for Montreal. Musgravo, who finished second oii CandlelHrry in yesterdays big event, returns to ride the horses of J. E. Seagram, to whom he is under contraet. and Tim Donohue. coneededly the best rider In the cross-country division, goes to ride the junipers of .1. W. Colt. A. II. Iligginson of Boston, who races under the name of .Mr. Chelland. will also have him handle Sir Wooster and Ballaealla in their stake engagements.
