BAYARD 0 CERTAINTY FOR ST. LEGER. Mr. Fairies Colt a Firm Favorite for Big JJoncastcr Race Racing Gossip and Statistics. London, Eng.. August 19. The decision of the St. Leger is not far away and interest In the big race, in -abeyance for some weeks, is beginning to freshen and will grow apace until it is time for the racing clans to gather on Doncaster Town Moor. Bayardo remains a firmly established favorite and in the opinion of experts is almost sure to win. But that does not prevent the less expert from entertaining views to the contrary and It is a fact that in such betting as crops Up now and then Minoru has two backers to where Bayardo has one. In one outbreak at Tattersalls on settllug day recently he was backed in one bet of .,500 to ,500, besides such smaller wagers as, 00 to 00. 50 to 50. 75 to 25, while an offer to lay ,000 to ,000 against Bayardo met no acceptors. Both "of the favorites are reported to be in the finest condition possible. Louviers, also doing splendidly, has quiet support when a price that meets the views of his admirers is offered, one transaction of ,000 to 50 being recorded on the occasion referred to A new fancy, the Irish-bred colt. Bachelors Double ; winner of the Irish Derby and other races in Ireland and said to be a good colt, has come in for backing at the. outsiders rate of 100 to 7i The Ascot Gold Cup winner, Bpinba, has been amiss and stopped in Uiis work, but is recovering and may be able to represent France in the race, although it is a doubtful ease. Little is heard in connection with the St. Leger of such other possible starters as Mlrador. Jalens, Esperanto. Carrousel, Phalcron. William IV.. Diamond Stud or the French candidates, but there is no thought that the three favorites will have the race to themselves; The race comes off ednesday. September S and it is expected to be contested by from twelve to fifteen starters. -Mr. Jveone s Esperanto and Selectman are both eligible and arc very well, but there has been no statement from Bcckhampton as to whether either or both are to start. Esperanto has shown in this countrv that he stays well, but has not shown ability to compete hopefully with the formidable opposition lie would have to meet in the St. Leger. Selectman sonly start over here was in the Richmond .Park Easter Handicap at Kempton Park last April, .in whiclr he finished fifth in moderate company, but was so obviously unready for racing that no account ;can be taken of the race. A singularly sad bereavement the loss of their ;mother having overtaken the Wootton family, the two jockeys of that name were unable to appear in -the saddle after Tuesday, and in consequence Frank made no progress toward his century of winning mounts. His immediate successors iii the list. Malier. Higgs and Saxby, each had three winners, the popular Danny .having only four mounts during the week. The riding record to date is as follows: Jockey.
