GETTING READY AT CHURCHILL DOWNS. Louisville, Ky.. August 31. Although the fall meeting of the New Louisville Jockey Club is nearly a month away, already things are being shaped up at Churchill Downs. During the past Aveek a corps of Avorkmen have been busy as bees at the grounds. One of the improvements hoav under construction is the erection of a -overed Avalkway leading from the entrance gate to the grandstand. Other Avork going on at the track now is the painting of the A-arious buildings, or at least portions of the structures, the grandstand, clubhouse and betting shed all being touched up. The grass la being mowed and cut short in the inner field, and the steeplechase course cleaned and trimmed up. Nothing much will be done with the stables for a Aveek or two yet, as by actual count at present there are only fourteen horses in training at the grounds. There Avill be not less than 250 horses here from the Canadian circuit, but none of these is expected to arrive until about September IS or 20. Not so many are expected from the big eastern tracks, though trainer Pat Coyne is sure to be on hand for the opening day Avlth Arcite. Sir Clegcs and the other members of George J. Longs home stable. AVI tli the usual contingent that drops in here for any meeting from the Kentucky Association track at Lexington, then, it is easy to figure out that not less- than 500 or 000 borses will be on hand Avhen the bugle sounds for the Inaugural race on Septemler 25. Maretzl. a son of Nasturtium, that Avas a good breadwinner for R. Tucker, is being fitted at Churchill Downs for the State Fair races, and is expected to pull down at least one of the nurses bung up by that association. His owner thinks he can dispose of such a mare as J.ady Vie. Which is coming here from Lexington to try for the State Fair running purses. If the Kentucky Association holds a fall race meeting at Lexington. Will J. Shelly will act as secretary, and lie will go there a week before the meeting to get things in readiness, if the situation calls lor such a necessity. Next Avinter it is likely the Kentuckv Association will elect a regular secretary. There are about as many applicants around Lexington for the place as for some fat political job. The Kentucky Association has had no secretary since the death of AV. It. Letcher. AVhile Gray Steele, trainer Davis recent purchase, now quartered at Churchill Downs, Is improving rapidly, his owner does not think he can race the son of Allan-a-Dale before the Latonia fall meeting.
