RACING INVESTMENTS OF TWO EASTERNERS. New York. September 1. It. T. Wilson, Jr., has come to be regarded as one of Americas foremost turfmen. Before racing in the east was in peril Mr. Wilson always had a formidable string of thoroughbreds, including The Parader and other good ones, but he had little to do with the government of the sport, though a member of the Jockey Club. During the fight to defeat the Hart-Agnew measure, however. Sir. Wilson became actively engaged, and when defeat became the lot of the Jockey Club he showed increased loyalty to the cause. He notified trainer Healey to operate on the usual lines, and at the same time willingly accepted thu responsibility of handling the affairs of the Saratoga Racing Association, of which he is the president. Furthermore, Mr. Wilson surprised the turf world last spring when he made a deal with John E. Madden, by which all of the latters best yearlings were turned over to the Montpelier Stable for . 0,000. Mr. Wilson followed this up by purchasing the three-vear-old. Olambala. from Jolin G. Greener for .0,000. and was rewarded partially when the Ornus colt won the SaratogaCup. Mr. Wilson will, doubtless, have one of the most formidable racing stables in this country next year and turfmen hope to see him win a big share of the stakes. .Mr. Wilsons liberal policy lias been duplicated by James E. Gaffney. the former Tammany alderman, who has spent nearly 0,000 for horses within tho last three months, ln addition to putting up 5,000 for Barleythorpe and 0,000 for Alfred Noble. Mr. Gaffney paid ,500 for Louise S., a star two-year-old filly, and about ,000 for Dr. Barkley and Julia Powel. Such investments in thoroughbreds speak volumes for the future of racing in the state of New York and have done much to restore confidence.
