TURFMEN TURN TO RICE GROWING. Memphis. Tenn., September 2. Former Mcmphians who forsook the turf when drastic legislation put an end to the sport in Tennessee, are making good in other fields, according to information reaching here from Houston, where the first car of new Texas rice from the 1909 crop has been received, grown by the Gertie Agricultural Company, a corporation headed by G. C. Bennett. J. W. Schorr. Malcolm N. Macfarlan and others identified with the thoroughbred sport here a few years back. Mr. Macfarlan, who was formerly secretary of the Memphis Jockey Club, and presiding judge at the meeting at Montgomery Park, is in charge of the Gertie Companys property, which consists of an extensive tract iu fertile Harris county, near Houston.
