ALL EYES ON THE FLATBUSH. Trainer Rowe Undecided as to Starting of Sweep-Horsemen Look Upon Candleberry -with Favor. New York, September 2. Jockey Butwell, who rode Sweep in tlie Futurity, maintains that Rocky OBriens victory in the Hopeful Stakes was a tluke. Butwell says that Sweep lost nearly six lengths because of interference in tlie early stages of the Hopeful, but was closing rapidly at the end. "If the distance had been half a furlong more." says iiutwell, "Sweep would have won sure. He is a better colt than Waldo right now. and I hope they will meet before the season ends." Sweep cooled out nicely after the Futurity and njoyed a light exercise gallop the next morning. Trainer Itowe is undecided as to starting the Ben Brush colt in the Flatbush Stakes, to be run Saturday. If Sweep goes to the post he will carry 120 pounds to Waldos 115, in which event it is believed the Futurity winner will have a difficult task cut out for him. Under the conditions of the Flatbush, which is at seven furlongs, run over the main course, the weights are fixed at seven pounds below the scale, or 115 pounds, with a penalty of five pounds for winners of ,000 after August 15 and a maiden allowance of ten iiounds. Sweeps success in the Futurity incurs a five-pound penalty, but as Waldo has not won within the stipulated period, he gets in with 115 pounds. In the Saratoga Special Waldo defeated Sweep at even weights, but the race was not truly run. Sweep was tangled up at the start and was also interfered with twice by Waldo in tlie run to the far turn. After that Sweep closed resolutely, but Waldo hail an advantage of three lengths at the finish. With the. question of supremacy in doubt, therefore, racegoers are anxious to see Sweep and Waldo meet again. If Sweep does not start Gras-mere will probably try conclusions with Waldo, but under the same weight conditions, as the Meddler colt must take up a penalty for winning the United States Hotel Stakes. In that event Grasmere. in receipt of eleven pounds from Waldo, led all the way and won in a drive, but Waldo, after being iractically left, was tlie victim of a foul for which Fauntleroy was disqualified. Some horsemen are inclined to the belief that Candleberry will be the winner of the Flatbush. for the reason that he will receive a maiden allowance, making his burden 105 pounds, and that the increased distance will be to his liking.
