WINNERS OF THE AUTUMN STAKES v The history of the Autumn Stakes began witli the first year of racing at the Sheepshead Bay track and until the present year it has always been a closed stake race of considerable value and importance. This year it is run as an overnight closing purse. The first two winners Natalie and Preciosa were of moderate class, but the next two Firenze and Emperor of Norfolk were giants among race horses. Although u small mare, Firenze was a great weight carrier and stayer and almost unconquerable. Emperor of Norfolk was a crack two-year-old and the best three-year-old of 1SS8, the American Derby being one of the many races he won that year for "Lucky" Baldwin. Other subsequent winners of high fame were Sallie -McCiellaiid. York v lie Belle. Lady Violet, Dobbins, Crescendo, Hamburg and Mesmerist. Last yeas it fell to the crack filly. Trance.
