REVERSALS AT FORT ERIE HYPERION II. RECOVERS HIS SPEED WITH STARTLING SUDDENNESS. Followers of Public Form Have Disastrous Day-Schorr, Bedwell and Johnson Stables Monopolize Purses. Buffalo, N. Y., September 2. The return ot fine weather resulted in an influx of visitors at Fort Erie this afternoon, and the crowd was rewarded by splendid sport. Small fields were the rule throughout, but as the contestants were evenly matched in most instances, the racing was spirited and speculation tlie liveliest of tlie week. The colors of J. W. Schorr. L. Johnson and H. G. BQdwell were prominent during the afternoon, representatives from these three stables evenly dividing six of the purses. The other purse went to J. AV. Fuller, whose General Marchmont scored a scratch victory In the closing dash. The feature race, a handicap at a mile and a sixteenth, went to All Red, which was forced to do his best to outstay Old Honesty, the top weight. Grania dominated the running for the first three-quarters, as usual, but thereafter found her weight troublesome and gave way to All Red and Old Honesty, which pair fought it out to the finish, with the three-year-old drawing away steadily at the end. The succeeding race brought together a fair band of sprinters and furnished an upset in the defeat of Al Muller by Hyperion II. The latter showed startling improvement over his recent essays and scored the easiest victory of the afternoon. Al Muller had little difficulty in disposing of St. Jeanne for second place. Superior riding on the part of Guv Burns enabled J. W. Schorr to land the purses in the first and second races, with Paul Davis and George W. Le-bolt, respectively. In the opening race. Galvesca was much the best, but C. Boss messed her about badly In the last few strides, which encompassed her defeat Howards inability to put up a strong finish in the second was instrumental in bringing about Marchmonets defeat. Burns lifting George W. Lebolt home in the last stride. Ragman was pressing the pair closely near the finish and would have beaten both in a few more strides. II. G. Bedwell scored his initial success of the afternoon in the third race, when RIghteasy spread-eagled Dr. Waldo Briggs and Sewell and won in. a canter. The Wrestler, his other winner, scored at the shortest price of the afternoon. He led Flora Riley and Alice, the only other starters, by a big margin from barrier rise to finish. The closing dash promised a rattling contest, but Anne McGees failure to get away from the barrier in a forward position eliminated her as a factor. Ceremonius appeared to have the race at his mercy iu the stretch, but the incompetent Rogers almost fell off when General Marchmont challenged and Ceremonius was beaten in the last stride. W. II. Fizer furnished two of the beaten favorites during the .afternoon in Anne MeGec and Al Muller. Both were extensively supported by large followings. and Fizer suffered additionally- bv having Al Muller claimed after the race by Fred Luzader. acting for J. R. Wainwright The price paid was ,045. Ceremonius was another horse that was claimed, Al Koenigsberg paying 40 for the animal. J. A. Strode, trainer for Fred Leppert. has protested to the judges against the awarding of Anna L. Daley to J. S. Ward, on the ground that J. S. Cooper, who handed In the claim for the fillv after her defeat of yesterday, was not Wards authorized agent. Fred Luzader will ship most of his horses at the close of this meeting to Churchill Downs, where thev will be rested until the resumption of Kentucky racing. He will send Posing.
