ADDED STARTER WINS STRATHC0NA. Steeplechase Feature of Blue Bonnets Program Affords Interesting Spectacle. Montreal, Que., September 9. The Strathcoua Steeplechase, over the full course, the feature race at Blue Bonnets this afternoon, was taken by the added starter, Daera. in a hard drive of four. Waterway landing second place, with Byzantine and Bergoo. the only other starters that did not meet with mishap, close up. The race as a spectacle was interesting, those that finished furnishing a spirited struggle for almost the entire distance. Reginald dominated the running iu the early stages and. taking a commanding lead, threatened to spread-eagle the others. He was nearly a sixteenth of a mile in advance of his closest pursuer and going well in hand when he bolted out of the course and his rider was unable to get him again, under, control, . The disappointment of the race was Sir Wooster, which had been shipped here from New York with the ex-"pectntion of taking down the purse. Jockey W. Allen had also been imported from the Metropolitan tracks to ride him. He went well until reaching the sixth hedge, where lie came a cropper, but neither rider nor horse sustained injury. Sharp action, accompanied by close finishes, featured most of the races this afternoon. A majority of the choices were successful and the large attendance present were well compensated. An echo of the bidding up of Martin Doyle yesterday came when Amos Turney boosted Righteasy after that lillys victory in the second race. II. G. Bedwell, the owner of Righteasy. had done, the bidding on Martin Doyle. Turney stopped at SI. GOO. which was an advance of iu0 over Righteasys price. In the closing race Edward Garrison claimed St. Elm-woimI. paying ,050 for him. Backers of J. W. Schorrs pair. Paul Davis and Bob Co. favorites in the opening race, were given a few anxious moments after the former had finished first, on account of a claim of foul that the rider of Inflection made to the stewards. After a conference, the ollicials allowed the result to stand as placed by the judges, but suspended jockey Guv Burns, who had the mount on Paul Davis, for rough riding. A dozen cheap platers furnished the contention in the third race, which went to The Earl after a sharp stretch sprint to wear down Sight. Sahado, the favorite; was third. Another rousing finish came with the running of the fifth race, when Galvesca. the favorite, got up in the last stride to take the purse from Mae Henley, with Shepards Song only a head back of the pair. Ragman, another favorite, showed the way for the entire distance in the closing dash Joe Rose outstaying Keep Moving in the finish. The owners of Manzano. which finished second to Dacra in yesterdays steeplechase, protested the payment of the purse to the winner on tlie ground that he had carried incorrect weight. He should have had up 134 pounds, according to the conditions, lint started with three pounds less. The stewards sustained the protest and awarded first money to Manzano. Caloorahatchce. which broke down yesterday, was found to be more seriously injured than at first thought and liad to be destroyed. Gwyn R. Tompkins came up from New York to see the running of tlie steeplechase and especially to witness the performance of Sir Wooster. Jockey Allen, wlio had tlie mount, is under contract to Tompkins. Elmer Wilson, who did the starting at the Maryland Hunt Clubs recent four days meeting, returned today and took his place as assistant to starter Dade. Wilson reports that the Maryland meeting was a big success and was well attended. William Shields has donated to the Canadian breeding bureau the stallion. Call Boy. by Plaudit Imp. The horse will be shipped to one of the northern provinces.
