Rome Respess attributes the poor race run Tuesday by Louise Vvellos. the filly that defeated Amelia Jenks and Democrat her lirs:t time out at Saratoga, to a distemper she contracted at Alio Springs. The day after her brilliant success at prodigal odds. Louise Welles began coughing and discharging at the nose. She was a sick filly for a few davs, and Mr. Respess had to discontinue training her for a week or ten days. Louise Welles has done well since she arrived at Slieepshead Bay. however. She" worked five fnrlongs out of the chute in 1:02 for Tuesdays race. In spite of which Mr. Respess was afraid that she might stop. But it Ixuiise Welles did not happen to be as good as lier owner might have Wished, she would hardly have finished last if she had not been bumped at the elbow of the Futurity course.
