HOCHELAGA TO CHIEF KEE JOCKEY LEES POWERFUL FINISH DECIDES STIRRING CONTEST AT MONTREAL. P. M. Civills Youngster Gets a Purse That Amelia Jenks, Beaten a Head, Should Have Won Seagram Colors in Front, Montreal, September 14. With jockey J. Lee rid. ing like a demon. P. M. Civills two-year-old. Chief Kee, got up in the closing stride to win the Hoche-laga Handicap by a head from Amelia Jenks at Blue Bonnets this afternoon. The race was the feature of the program offered by the Montreal Jockey Club and it brought out a large attendance. There were other attractions, including a handicap at a mile for all ages, a steeplechase over the two-mile course and a race for Canadian-breds. Interest naturally centered In the Hochelaga. as the fielel programmeil included the pick of the younger division racing here. The race was robbeel of much of its interest by withdrawals, but despite the fact that only four went to the post it proved a stirring contest with three of the contenders finishing heads apart in . a furious drive. The handicapper certainly ganged the youngsters to a nicety and it was one of the best raws of Its kind run at the meeting. In the early stages the speeely Galvesca dashed. Into a commanding lead and. going down the backstretch. it lookeel as if she would make a runaway race of it. Heretofore Galvesca has shown a disposition to stop, but in toelays race she hung on with rare gameness in the final drive. Not until the furlong pole had beep reacheel did she begin to weaken and it was here that Lee sat down to make his determineel finish. Chief Kee responeleel with rare gameness to Lees heroic tactics and just did manage to get up. Amelia Jenks should probably have won. as she undoubtedly was best. She ran coupleel with Kingship as the Livingston entry and the stable declared to win with tiie latter. It was common report before the race that trainer Feakes hail been handicappeel by the heavy going in preparing these youngsters for their engagement and it was for this reason that they1 went back in the betting. When it came to the running. Kingship appeared unable to nntrack himself. wl;Jle Amelia Jenks was rateel along, in seconei position, following the leader under restraint. At the eighth pole Herbert, on Amelia Jenks. did not appear to know what to elo. He. evidently was expecting Kingship to come from . behinel, anel not until the last dezen strides eliel .tie" finally realize that Kingship was not there. Herbert then went to a drive anel Amelia Jenks responded sufficiently to beat Galvesca a head on the post for place. The all-aged handicap also furnished a close finish, Pinkola. Anna L. Daley and Old Honesty fighting it out In .the stretch and finishing as named half lengths apart. It was, a splendid contest and the, finish, aroused much enthusiasm. Sir Wooster proveel an easy victor in the steeplechase. He was ridden by T.
