VERSATILITY OF THE THOROUGHBRED. "Are these gallopers ever good for anything else?" The. question was addressed to one o the old-timers at thu Windsor track at Detroit. "I think there is nothing they cannot adapt .themselves to," was his reply. . Now out here there is one owner who is also a brewer. He lias one of the largest breweries down smith. He has u big stable of thoroughbreds up north. Every once in a while a horse will go wrong. The animal might hurt a tendon or injure himself otherwise while going at great speed. He becomes worthless for racing purposes, so this brewer ships him south and the galloper Is assigned to haul bVr through the streets. There are many thoroughbreds now who go as well under harness as under saddle. I know several people who have family horses that were formerly regulars on the running tracks. As for a saddle horse. I wouldnt have anything outside of a thoroughbred. .1 think they make the best saddle horses in the world. You say that they have a habit of going at full speed. That s true. Yoil buy a thoroughbred and start him in for saddle purposes and vou will soon discover that he has carried the habit he has learned at the barrier with him, but vou can easily break him of that. You will discover that the thoroughbred is the keenest animal on earth and that he can lie easily broken of anv habit. Of course, he will not show you any faiicv gaits, but you can depend on hini. and that Is more thau you can say for the majority of saddle horses."
