BIG RUN-UP AT WOODBINE AMOS TURNEY STANDS BOOST OF ,800 ON MARTIN DOYLE. H. G. Bodwcll, Whoso Entry Finishes Second and Third in Stake, Does the Bidding:, Dcspito Understanding- Hinted At, Toronto. Out.. September 22. -The program offered by the Ontario Jockey Clnb this afternoon was one of the best of the meeting. Besides the Sefton Steeplechase, it had as features the Durham Cup and the Voltigeur Selling Stakes. The fields in . a majority of instances were well balanced and produced stirring contests. Joseph E. Seagram started two in the Durham Qip and finished first and third with Seismic and Mendlp, the former winning in a canter from Cannie- Maid. Probably the biggest run-up that ever occurred at Woodbine came after Amos Turneys Martini Doylo made a runaway of the Voltigeur Stakes. Thchorse was entered for ,200. and II. G. Bedwell. whose .Teanette M. finished second, raised Martin Doyle to ,000. Tumey protected the horse -with the customary advance of and-retained him. Turney was greatly agitated over the boost. He said that ho had lieen led to believe that Bedwell would not liotlier liis horse, and hinted at some understanding in regard to these matters as a result of his recent action In returning The Wrestler to Bedwell at tho same figure that the horse cost him after, taking hlra out of the race at Blue Bonnets in which Bedwell boosted iMartin Doyle. Turneynow has blood in his eye and it is likely that he will play an important part in selling" race-affairs from now on. The Sefton Steeplechase furnished a driving finish between Fincastle and Harrington,-in which "Mr. Chetlands" horse beat the Gerst jumper a scant length. Harrington showed keen speed throughout, but took all of Ills fences sldewise. He struck tho last jump and all but unseated Slater. The mishap at tills point cost Harrington the race. i In the Durham Cup Seismic proved easily best.-Musgrave had hlirt under stout restraint until tho : last quarter. Entering the homestretch Seismic moved .up and. taking art easy lead, won in a romp from Cannle.3Iaid. The, tabled history of the Durham Cup. first raced for in 1900. is as follows: Year. Winner. A. Wt. Jockey. Val. Time, 1900 Inferno 4 131 C. Koerner..100 3:02 1907 Kelpie .......3 107 Mulcahy .. . 1.1 3:05 190S Inferno -. fi 130 Musgrave .. l.Jin 3:0fit 1909 Seismic ..... .4 119 Musgrave . . 1.130 3:03 : Martin Doyle led his opponents throughout In thot -Voltigeur Stakes and. despite a wide turn entqring the homestretch, by which he lost considerable, ground, he won in a canter. The Bedwell pair, Jeanette M. and Zipangb, made a. determined bid at the quarter post, but weakened at the end and. tho mare beat the horse by a nose for place. Tapllri worked ZIpapgo out a mile and a half in 2:3Ci and. cantered out five furlongs farther. This -was part of Zlpangos preparation for the Ontario Jockey Club Cun. which will be run on the closing day oC the meeting. Fort Johnson carried tlie Mackenzie colors to victory for the first time today when he won tlie Doneaster Purse from Lawrence P. Daley. Hc.made it good showing and Is likely to hold his ovia in any company from now on-. There is a dispute between J. W. Burttsclicll and C. Wilson over jockey J. Wilson. The latter claims to hold a contract on the boy. while Burttschell says that he purchased the papers that Wilson held during the Fort Erie meeting. Tlie matter has bee,u carried before tlie stewards for adjustment. Steeplechase jockey Ernest Heldcr arrived at Woodbine this morning. Holder came from New York and is tit and ready to accept mounts. During the Saratoga meeting it .was reported that Ileider had lost his sight and his "many Canadian friends received a pleasant surprise when he showed up In Toronto in good condition. Heider is one of the best cross-country jockeys today, and there surely will be a demand for his services here. At a sale of the Valley Farm yearlings tills morning E. Glasco of Windsor purchased a sister to Shlmonese for 1909.sh00. This w1"5 the top price of the sale. , v Shlmonese. which broke down in her last race, will lie bred to David Gnrrick. Jockey Davenirt arrived from New York this morning and will finish out the season on the Canadian circuit. He will do the lightweight riding for the Turney stable. James McLaughlin, Jr.. lias sold to -J. Reese of Montreal tlie two-year-old, Daisy Oarth. Matt Fcakes will ship the sixteen horses he is training for Xfrs. L. A.
