RECORD OF JOCKEYS FOR 1910. Guy Garner, whose riding career began only the year previous, aud who, in 1909, achieved ouly a moderate degree ol success, heads the list of American jockeys for 1910 in respect to number of winning mounts, but is surpassed in percentage by C. II. Shilling, who is rightfully regarded as the most skillful of present-day jockeys in this country. But for frequent periods of absence from the saddle. Shilling undoubtedly would have attained the distinction of piloting the greatest number of winners during the year instead of finishing in second place. Garner is riding successfully at Oakland under the management of his contract employer. Earl Linnell, and is constantly gaining in experience and skill. His weight is so little that many seasons of usefulness in the saddle may be expected of him. He is a brother of C. Garner, who rode with considerable success on American tracks some years ago. V. Powers, who was the leading jockey of 1909. and who shares with Tommy Burns and Walter Miller the enviable record of having twice headed the American jockey list, lias been forced by increasing weight to relinquish riding in this country, but may be seen in the saddle during the coming year on the European turf, which affords a haven for American riders who have outgrown the weight scales in this country.
