FINANCIAL TROUBLES IN TAMPA RING. Tampa. Fla.. February 1. A new development came today, when Sam Stephens and his associates were unable to continue bookmaking at the West Tampa track because of temporary financial embarrassment. Smith and" Colby resumed charge of the betting ring. Mr. Stephens claims that the embarrassment is only temporary and that he will resume operations tomorrow. On the other hand. Smith and Colby state that their taking hold this afternoon was contingent on continuing business for the remainder of the racing term. air. Stephens had paid Tor a weeks concession in advance and naturally claiiijs the lease on the plant until Saturday night, but the other side contends that his lease was nullified by Ids failure to carry out his program of doing business today. It is tthought that the entire matter will bo fully straightened out tonight at a conference of all parties concerned. It would bo bad policy to shut down at this time when everything point to success .for the future of racing. The crowds are constantly increasing and the volume of speculation is. gaining steadily. . The judges announced the suspension of jockey Pickett "pending further ihvestlgatioiV ol1iis" ride on Little Dutch in the race won by Eglantine yesterday. The judges. also announce the suspension of jockey Davenport for his apparent lack of effort on R. J. Swanner in. his former starts. The lirst run-up of the meeting came after Lighthouses victory, when J. F. Daniels- raised his price from 00 to 00. but failed to get him.
