PROPOSES TAX ON CANADIAN TRACKS. Toronto, Ont., February 1. It is understood that the provincial treasurer, Hon. A. J. Matheson, will introduce during the present session of the Ontario Legislature a bill providing for the imposition of a tax of 00 a day on every race track in the province where bookmakers are allowed. The Ontario .Toekev Club will not come under the new regulation, as the pari-muluel system of betting is to ba used at Woodbine iii future; but there are several other race tracks? in the province at Hamilton, Dnfferin Park. Windsor and Fort Erie. As there are fourteen days of racing at each of these tracks even- season tlie province will collect ,400 from each", or ,000 in all. In addition to the tax. the fact that the tracks must pay a license will bring tlieni more under the jurisdiction of the provincial authorities, and to the provincial police will be assigned the duty of taking charge of the enforcement of the law at all race tracks in the province.
