NOTES OF RACING IN ENGLAND. Mushrooms victories in the City and Suburban Handicap and the March Stakes have led to his being pronounced the best three-year-old of the year in England. Unluckily for his owner he was not nominated to the Two Thousand, Derby or St. Leger and is only moderately well engaged In other closed events. He is a son of the "triple crown" winner, Common, and by general consent much the best racer that horse has ever sired. Common is now twenty-three years old and until now in his declining years had never sired a really high-class horse. The filly Melody, which won the Hyde Park Plate at Epsom for Sam Darling, is a sister to Mediant and Night Rider, and a youngster of great speed, probably the equal of Mediant in that regard. II. de Courcoy Forties Brockelsby Stakes winner Mr. Peeper, ran third to her but could have been second, having been eased up when plainly beaten by Melody. The latter is heavily engaged in the name of Charles Carroll, but appears to have been sold to trainer Darling. At any rate, she runs iu his name and colors, as also does Night Rider. Major Fife lias suffered a serious loss by the dcatli of his young broodmare, Laces and Graces, a sister to Airs and Graces, the winner of the Oaks in 1S9S. By Ayrshire, out of Lady Alwyne, Laces and Graces was foaled in 1900, and only ran once, when, as a two-year-old carrying the colors of Lord Lonsdale, she was unplaced for the Mowbray Plate at Thirsk. Though showing no form on the course her high breeding made her a groat acquisition to the stud, at which it was only reasonable to anticipate she would have a brilliant career. R. Wootton, the Epsom trainer, studies the comfort of his two sons, Frank and Stanley, to the minutest detail. Recently a private Turkish bath lias been built adjoining his up-to-date homestead at Trendwell House. According to the decision of the Dutch Parliament, the bill, recently under discussion, which will close all the offices at Flushing, Middolburg. the Hague, and elsewhere, and declare illegal the "totalizator" and all other methods of gambling, lias been delayed until the session of this month, when It will bo resumed. Danny Maher leads the jockeys riding in England both in percentage and ljumber of winning mounts. Frank Wooten is taking on weight rapidly and is no longer a lightweight, so ho is deprived of the advantage he formerly possessed of being able to ride at weights hopeless to Maher. Lightweight C. Trigg is Mahers closest competitor in winning mounts and is riding with1 great skill. Maher lias ridden three Derby winners, and has also carried off most of the other great-races, while lie scored over hurdles at his only attempt. Lord Rosebery and Leopold de Rothschild are, at present, his chief employers. Prince Arthur of Connaught, only son of Canadas next governor-general, went to see the Italian Derby run when ho was in Rome last month, and the king and he made a visit to the paddock after the race for a closer inspection of the winner, the Italian-bred Guhlo Reni. The stakes amounted to 50,000 lire, or about 0,000, and seven horses ran.
