STJNSTAR RETIRED TO THE STUD. There is a general impression in England that Sunstar was really an extraordinary race horse and that he could hardly have failed to win the St. Leger had he remained sound. But he recently broke down In training for the event and the occurrence led Sporting Life to say on the day following": "Sunstars breakdown, though hot entirely unexpected, is to be regretted, for everyone was hoping that the trouble which manifested itself during the race for the Derby -would be overcome by rest and careful treatment, and that the son of Sundridge would be able to run in the St Leger and add his name to the list of winners of the Triple Crown. This there seemed every prospect of his doing, for on the running at Epsom he appeared to have the leating of all the possible competitors at Doncaster, and all doubts as to his staying the course had been set at rest. "As Sunstar is to retire to the stud his tabulated pedigre will prove of interest. r S Vedette. Speculum. ... Doralicc. ri f3 Newminster. Ladvliko 7 a"int0 l 2 ! .3 Zuloika. - o .. Newminster. His first appearance on a race course was in the New -Stakes at Ascot last year, when; he finished fourth to Seaforth. Nereslan and Sandal. He then won the Exeter Stakes at Newmarket First July meeting, beating Canvasback a neck. A defeat by St. Nat followed in the Levant Stakes at Goodwood, but he next ran away with the International Foal Stakes at Kempton Park, in which Ilia, which was second, was in receipt of twelve pounds. In the Champagne Stakes at Don-caster lie was lieaten by Pietri and Wrinkler, and in the hopeful Stakes at Newmarket First October meeting ran a dead heat witli Borrow. "This year Sunstar proved himself far in advance of Ills own age. Coming out first for the Tsvo Thousand Guineas ho won In a canter from Stedfast, with ids stable companion, Lycaon. third, while in the Newmarket Stakes lie had no difficulty in heating tlie moderate opposition, odds of 100 to 15 being laid on him. "Shortly before the Derby all sorts of wild rumors were circulated concerning the horse, some even going so far as to hint that efforts would be made to prevent him winning. How he won is now. of course, a matter of turf history. Notwithstanding the fact that he broke down a furlong from home, he ran on gamely to the end, aud actually increasing his lead in tlie last hundred yards, finished two lengths in front of Stedfast. with twenty-four others behind the pair. He has been ridden in his races this year by tlie French jockey, G. Stern. "Mr. Joel can be represented in the great St. Lger classic by Lycaon. a son of Cyilene and La Vlerge, which, since finishing third in the Two Thousand Guineas, won the Gratwicke Stakes at Goodwood over a mile and a hulf."
