REDUCES AMERICAN RECORD R. F. CARMANS COLONEL ASHMEADE RUNS MILE AND TWENTY YARDS IN 1:39. Sets Fast Pace All the Way in Winning the Cherokee Selling Stakes, and His Statlcmato, G. M. Miller, Finishes Second Sonada Again a Winner. Louisville, Ky., October 5. It. P. Carmans entry. Colonel Ashmeado and G. M. Miller, landed first and second in the Cherokee Selling Stakes, the feature of todays "good card at Churchill Downs. Colonel Ash-nieade led for the entire trip. He maintained a wonderfully fast pace from the start and finished the mile and twenty yards in l:3Ujt establishing a new American record for the distance. The former lei-ord was 1:39 J and had been made by J. II. Recti last season over the Churchill Downs track. The stakes carried a gross value of ,9S0, of which Mr. Carmans share was ,770. Eight of the best sell-in;; platers in local training made up the Held, with II. R. Brandts Angelus most fancied, mainly because of fast preliminary trials he had shown. Ho was never really formidable in the running and wound up far in the rear. Donau was Colonel Ash-mcades most persistent pursuer for three-quarters, and when be retired Helmet made a strong bid for the lead, but fell back in the final sixteenth. G. M. Miller, which was kept in restraint until rounding the last turn, came fast when called on and disposed of Helmet near the end. Woodford and Wimmcrs pood two-year-old colt Sonada scored again this afternoon. It was his second effort in a racing way and a vastly better one than before. He broke from the barrier in educated fash ion and kept on even terms with the speedy Azyiade with ease, though under mild restraint. When called on. he sprinted into the lead like a flash and won hard held. Azyiade was far in advance of the others for second place. A meeting between Worth and Sonada would bo an interesting event and General Manager Winn will make an effort to bring these eolts together next week. 1he Lexington contingent, headed by J. 1. Ross, made a handsome winning in the opening race when .1. W. Carter outpaced the others to the finish and brought up several lengths in advance of Dottie B., another supposed "good thing." Swnnnanoa won the second race easily enough. With bettor handling. Housemaid might have given her a sharp argument. Jockey Wrispen repeatedly throw Housemaid off her stride and for a time it appeared that he might cause her to trip and fall. He freed her from restraint in the stretch, but Swannanoa and Star ORyan then had too much or a lead for her to overcome and she finished in third place. Judge Price immediately called the rider into the stand and asked for an explanation of his ride. Wrispen stated that he had been ordered to keep the filly under restraint until the stretch was reached. The judges did not take action, deeming it a case of Incompetency on the part of the rider ind a too literal interpretation of orders. W. W. Dardens diminutive Little Father gave ! the public a setback in the third race by an impressive victory over some formidable sprinters, lie showed rare gameness by disposing of Love-Not in the early running and holding Stinger safe in the stretch drive. Round the World was making her initial start for a long time in this race and would have ljoen a contender but for Molesworth steering her into a jam In which her legs were considerably skinned. Azo, by a remarkable stretch sprint, got up in the last fowstrides to heat Mockler in the closing race, Startler taking third money. Four Endurance Stakes candidates were given their filial trials this morning and their work attracted much attention. Those that worked and the distances they went, with the time made and their riders, follows: Avlmor Sweeney, three miles in 5:35. First two miles in 3:302. Nadzu Loftus, two miles in 3:315. First mile in 1:452. Royal Report J. Deaveuport, two and one-quarter miles in 4:05. First two miles in 3:3S;. Messenger Boy. HeideU two miles in 3:34. First mile in 1 :45. There is still some doubt as to whether Fireman will be a starter, as he is showing decided symptoms of soreness. Markie M. is considered to be broken down and he may never again face the starter. The above quartet will positively start and Cherryola has also been announced as a prospective starter. The riders named above will in all probability pilot the mounts they worked this morning, except Heidel. Some other rider will be substituted on .Messenger Boy. J. Moore will have the mount on Cherryola. The Churchill Downs track is now at its best and if no more raiu falls before Saturday, it is among the probabilities that the running of the Kentucky Kndurance Stakes will witness the reduction of the American record for four miles. James Butler, who is extensively interested with Matt J. Winn in Mexican racing, will arrive tonight from New York and immediately go over plans for the racing in the Mexican cities the coming winter. The full plans, including the Juarez purse and stake offerings, probably will be made known tomorrow. The gold cup to be presented by the Kentucky State Racing Commission to the winner of the Endurance "Stakes will arrive tomorrow. J. W. Schorr and his son-in-law. George Reardon, arrived today from Canada, having motored from Toronto. Among the mornings work-outs were the following: Anne MeGee Five-eighths m 1:00;. Ceremonius Seven-eighths in 1:3-;. Compton Mile. in 1:45. Del Friar Three-quarters in 1:153. Golden Egg Five-eighths in 1:02. Jack Wall Half mile in 492. John Louis Five-eighths in 1:02;. Keep Moving Mile in 1:43;.
