The latter tired after closing a gap and making a game effort on the stretch turn. HUSKY LAD closed a big gap into a close up fourth. REPUBLICAN, after running in close pursuit of the leaders for the first half, finished fast and gamely under punishment and, outstaying MONSIEUR X. in the final drive, won going away. The latter, running in suddenly improved form, closed a big gap and finished resolutely, but tiring. CONGRESSMAN JAMES ran in closest pursuit to the stretch and tired under punishment. REY closed a great gap and finished with a rush. MAD RIVER also made up ground. JAMES DOCKERY showed speed, but quit. SHREVE set the pace to midway of the stretch and retired. The latter drew away into a long load while rounding the far turn and finished gamely, but tired in the last furlong and was weakly ridden at the finish. ED KECK tired after running in nearest pursuit to the stretch.
