SUGGESTING PAID ENGLISH STEWARDS. The South Australian racing clubs says the "Australasian" have come into line with the other Australian states, and for the future stewards, as well as other racing officials iu that state, will be paid, and they will be selected because of seeming fitness for the position not because they happen to bo members of committee or influential residents of the district in which a race meeting is being held. There are signs that New Zealand will have stipendiary stewards in the near future, and several leading English racing writers are beginning to wonder why the position of a steward is considered of so little importance that any man with a title or an abundance of money is considered fitted for the position, while the judge, starter and handicapper are paid ror their services, and appointed because they are supposed to possess special qualifications Tor the particular position.
