SELLING PLATERS IN ACTION JUAREZ CARD IS ENTIRELY GIVEN OVER TO CHEAPER CLASS OF HORSES. Roadmaster Wins Another Purse for Thomas H. Ryan and Is Only Favorite to Score Outsiders Take Lions Share of Purses. El Paso, Tex., March 9. The Juarez card was today given over completely to the selling platers, lor the first time in many a day. but. being well balanced, held out the promise of interesting racing, oven though deficient in class. Weather conditions continued pleasant. The sport began with a half-mile dash for two-year-old maidens, in which Favorite Article was returned tho winner in a nose finish with Meelicka. The latter had opened first choice, but was supplanted as favorite by Commaiiretta, which ran unplaced. Originator, whose chances wore so lightly regarded that 10 to 1 was quoted against him, turned up the winner iu the second race, which was contested by a big and mediocre field. He beat Freewill, another outsider, in a driving finish by a head. The third race, a mile dash for three-year-olds, went lo the credit of another outsider when Transact, from the stable or J. C. Ferris, beat Kick, Iho favorite, by a length. The stnrie-rs In the fourth race were of better quality than those in any other race during the day. T. II. Ryans Roadmaster, making the second start of his career, duplicated the victory that marked bis recent debut and confirmed the opinion that then prevailed that be would beat better horses than on the occasion of his maiden effort. He ruled favorite again today and won in a drive with Colquitt after leading all the way. Royal Dolly and General Marchmont, of which much was expected in this race, finished out of the money. Royal Dolly was the runner-up in the early part of the race, but General Machinont was deficient in speed. The horses engaged iu the fifth race were about on a par with the imor lot that ran in the second. Patrick F. graduated from the maiden class in winning the race, after having been backed- as a "good thing" at long odds. It was thought, in view of his recent good form, that Inele Ren, from the stable of J. F. and 11. S. Newman, had the closing race at his mercy, and he ruled a short-priced favorite. He led during the greater part of the running, but tired badly In the final furlong and was a beatcn-off fourth at the finish. Rey, which had been a forward contender most of the way, won the race with ease, and Blue-Beard beat Anna Reed by a head for second money. There are numerous horsemen here who plan to let up for a while on their horses and give them a rest, now that the Denver meeting is assured, but they are anxiously awaiting the arrival of a representative of the new organization to inform them if the accommodations at Denver are in suitable condition for the immediate shipment of horses to that point. There are probably two hundred horses here, the owners of which wish to leave for Denver at the expiration of this nieetiug. Mars Cassidy received word today from Bob Levy, manager of the Norfolk meeting, assuring him that the meeting will take place without interruption. Mr. Cassidy will officiate as starter. H. Tullett, owner of Henry Walbank, claimed Florin out of the third for ,500. II. F. Breivogel, acting manager in the absence of M. J. Winn, made the announcement today that the Juarez meeting will positively close Sunday, March 22. J. W. Fuller, who has had a remarkably successful season at Juarez, will race on the Canadian circuit the coming season. R. M. Small, who has handled the Fuller horses to marked advantage since he gave up the saddle, will continue to train them. C. W. Gasser will ship his stable to Kentucky at the close of the Juarez meeting, but will himself spend a few weeks in California before coming east.
