, ; i I MARION I GOOSBYS TRIUMPH i FTRST IN THE FIRST BIG STAKE RACE OF THE NEW ORLEANS MEETING. ; Pan Zareta Shows Great Speed for a Milo but Fails to Stay the Full Route — Immense Crowd Views the Event, New Orleans, La., February 10. — M. C. .Moore-Marion Goosby. with jockey Garner in the saddle, scored a signal triumph this afternoon at the Fair Grounds, warns he won the rich Merchants Handicap, having a net value of ,705 to the winner, iu a hard drive over Skeer Face, which ran coupled with Celesta as the Nevada Stock Farm entry. Pan Zareta followed the pair closely, after having acted as pacemaker until in the last seventy yards. The disappointment of the race was the running of the J. W. Schorr trio, consisting of Dick Williams. Syrian and Ed Crump. It was the hitters first start here and much interest centered in his performance. Pan Zareta showed a terrific burst of speed for the first mile, going this distance in 1:37%. The winner followed her close up and held well to his task in the final drive. Skeer Face also made a creditable showing. Eagle, by finishing fourth, earned 0O as bis part of the stakes. The big field was responsible for unavoidable crowding. I he rear guard at the start suffering badly when going to the first turn. All former attendance figures were shattered today by the immense throng which witnessed the sport. Conditions were again ideal for racing ami enthusiasm was keen. Most of the contests were hard fought. Dr. I.ar-rick showed a sparkling performance when lie shouldered 120 pounds and reduced the track record for five and a half furlongs by running the distance i.i 1:06%. Gold Rose and Colonel White jointly held the former record, which was made ten yenrs ago. The track record for a half mile was equaled by Solveig in the opener when she ran the distance in 47%. Mollie Montrose was the old-time record holder and made it in 1007. Secretary A. R. IiOUdon of the Hamilton Jockey Club and Judge Monck were visitors this afternoon and were amazed by the splendid racing conditions prevailing here. They will remain for some time before going on to Havana. Charles 0. Smith and Joe Simon were newcomers this afternoon from Chicago and will remain until the close of racing here, when the former will join the Loudon-Monek party at Havana. James Butler and his family will be arrivals here next Monday and will remain for some time before-going on to Juarez. Goodwood was claimed in the fifth race from R. F. Carman by E. T. Ricketts for 1916.sh00. The stake blanks for the rich fixtures to be decided at Douglas Park and Latonia were distributed to owners here this morning by Jack Campbell, who will look after the interests of both tracks. A special race at one mile, with ,000 added bv the association, is in prospect for next Wednesday which will bring together Ed Crump. J. J. Lillis and Pan Zareta. the former to concede ten pounds by carrying 118 and J. J. Lillis and Pan Zareta to carry MS. The proposition was submitted by Man ager Murphy to Messrs. SHiorr. Newman and Way-land, and they have tentatively accepted, conditional upon Ed Crump and Pan Zareta coming out of tin i; race this afternoon in good condition. The ass ciation, in addition to the purse, will give the winner a handsome silver memento should the race record of 1:37% be broken.
