BOWIE RACING FOR TODAY MARYLAND TRACK IN GOOD CONDITION FOR OPENING OF THE EASTERN CAMPAIGN. Horses in Abundance -with Many Good Jockeys on Hand to Guide Them on Their Way. Washington. D. C. March 31. — The sprint; meeting of the Southern Maryland Agricultural Association, which begins at the Howie track tomorrow with the running of the Inaugural Handicap and six other races, will usher in the eastern racing season of 191»i, Howie having fallen heir to the place in the racing schedule that once belonged to Mating. There will lie twelve days of the sport, after which the spring meetings at Havre de Grace mid limlico will follow in sequence. Then the horses will go to New York for what promises to be the most brilliant racing since 1907. The Howie track has been vastly improved since last year. The storms of the winter just past have aided superintendent Thomas Strahan in smoothing down its rough places and making it safe and, by diligent top dressing, a growth of grass lias been started in the infield, which before the summer is over, will permit of the construction of one of the best steeplechase courses in the country. There are nearly seven hundred horses available for the races, five hundred of them being from the south and the rest from Howie, Henning and nearby wintering places. All of them are ready to race. There will be no difficulty, therefore, in filling the seven-race program every day and brisk sport and lively speculation is in sight. The Bowie management adopted the pari-mutuel system of betting last year and will stick to it. that style having lxcome so iwpular in Maryland that Havre de Grace, the last home of bookmaking. has taken it up. The races will be conducted under the authority of the Jockey Club. Joseph McLennan will act in the dual capacity of clerk of the course and scales; A. H. Dade will do the starting, and the paddock and patrol judges will be Herman I*. Conkling and Ernest Hall. It is a well-balanced program of seven races that has been provided for the opening day and. with favorable weather and track conditions that prevail, an immense gathering is looked for. The track is in excellent condition in spite of the recent rains and. while it is not of the paste -l oard variety, the footing is good. Horses that are good on a soft track run well at Howie and this is something that is well worth remembering. The backward spring has kept the New York trainers from getting their horses ready for the early meetings. Stables have been reserved for some of the eastern strings that are expected next week. Jockey John Bullman is here and his interests are being looked after by M. Sheedy. Jockeys J. McTaggart, J. Hutwell, M. Buxton, It. Ball. J. Metcalf. A. Schuttinger, E. Ambrose, i. Keogh. J. Hanover. W. Ward. J. Pitz. E. Forehand. J. Dryer and L. McAtee are here ready to accept mouuts. Algernon Daingerfield. accompanied by E. C. Smith, arrived today. They came from New York and were busily engaged at the track all morning, receiving applications for licenses from jockeys and trainers. George Phillips has sold Duke of Dunbar and Broomsedge to E. T. Zollicoffer. William Shields lias purchased from William Garth the two year -old Judge Winkfield by Sea King— Glad Tidings. This colt is a half-brother to Greetings and is said to have worked well at Denning. Jockey Joe Dreyer will do most of the riding for the W. I. Hurch stable. His engagements are being looked after by Jack Thornby. Secretary McLennan has received word from Hot Springs, asking that stalls be reserved for the stables of W. T. Anderson, 1. M Civill and A. C. Parretto. G. M. Gray has been engaged by G. A. Alexandra to look after his horses. He secured Henry Bondy as trainer of the Alexandra stable. Starter James Mftt— , as brown as a berry, is back from Havana, where he spent the winter starting the thoroughbreds at Oriental Park. He will remain in Maryland all spring and during the Havre de Grace meeting will act in his official capacity, Jockey J. McTaggart is here and will ride at Howie. He looks the picture of health and says lie is in good condition. T. McTaggart will not l e seen in Maryland this spring. He will ride for Harry Payne Whitney and will spend the spring in Kentucky. He will" wear the Whitney silk- in the big blue grass features. Because of tin- backward season in Maryland, horses that raced at the winter trucks should have the call during the early days of the Bowie meeting, provided their changing from a warm climate to a colder one has not affected them. Secretary McLeiman will have to look to these owners of horses to fill the longer distance races and it would not be at all surprising if some are called off owing to a failure to secure sufficient entries.
