LEXINGTON HORSES BEGIN REAL WORK. Lexington. Ky.. March 31.— The sun shone brightly on the Kentucky Association track this morning and. while the "dogs" were up and the track a second or two slow, all the horses got their first real exercise on the main track. This afternoon superintendent Ross had four harrows at work on the track and. if the good weather continues tomorrow, it is expected there will be some fine work. The first mile of the present season was worked by Crosthwaite and Johnstone at a two-minute gait with their chestnut colt Harold, purchased last year from George J. Long of Louisville. The string of Thomas C. McDowell was galloped, and while nothing much was asked of them, they all presented a grand appearance. Ground was broken this morning for eighty new stalls, which the association will have ready by the opening of the meeting. A telegram was received by O. A. Bianchi announcing the death of James Grant, for many years superintendent of the New California Jockey Clubs tracks at Oakland. Ingleside and Tanforan. Col. Robert Holloway reached home today from a hunting and fishing trip in Florida. John E. Madden today sold to Fred G. Good, of Cincinnati, the two-year-old bay filly by Fair Play — Lucy, Cross. W. B. Miller left today for New York after a stay with Price Headley. Among the work-outs today were those of several Derby candidates and the best noted were as follows : Chalmers — Three -eighths in 44. Hawthorn — Three-eighths in 44. Hops— Five-eighths in 1:13. Jack ODowd— Three-eighths in 42%. Kinney — Three-eighths in 42%. Pif Jr.-Five-eighths in 1:13. Prince Harry — Three-eighths in 43. Raincoat — Five-eighths in 1:09. U Stcppa — Five-eighths in 1:09.
