DISCUSSING SELLING RACE RULES. Racing Secretaries of Eastern Organizations Devoting Attention to Problem — Stake Entries. By Ed Cole. New York, March 31. — The subject of changing the condi t ions in selling races to keep high -class selling platers and handicap horses from being entered with the common racers is receiving much attention from secretaries and others concerned in racing hereabouts. While it is not likely there will be any material changes in conditions at Jamaica, it is pro-able races will be designed at Belmont Park which will permit any horse being claimed for his entered selling price or his selling price plus the purse. Many suggestions have been made, but there is a bit of an obstacle in the way. according to some interpreters of the rules, which may require a change in-tlie rules of the Jockey Club before definite action is taken in changing the conditions of selling races. Utile 127 rends: "Every horse running in a selling race shall, if the winner, be liable to be claimed for the selling price by the owner of any other horse running in the race, etc., etc.." after which comes the selling clause and then the claiming clause under which selling races have been run for generations. It is the first part of the rule that is the stumbling block to those who wish to experiment with "the no selling conditions," It is asserted that, according to the rule, all horses could be claimed for their entered selling price, the winner included, without the additional amount of the purse, which has always been the practice followed. If this rule was strictly lived up to. every horse could be bought for his entered selling price, no matter whether he won or not. Secretaries are somewhat at sea in the matter, as to make conditions contrary to the rules of racing would hardly do. Consequently the question of interpreting the rule will probably be put up to the Jockey Club liefore any decided change is made. To put in the conditions of a selling race. "Winner and all other starters subject to claim for entered price," would settle the whole question, and it would then be up to owners to enter their horses at a figure much nearer their true value. There would lie no need to change the existing rule, and there would lie no figuring how much a claimant had to put in the enevlope to make good his claim. - With probably a few more yet to come, the entries in three important Saratoga Stake races are of the following horses: The eligibles for the Saratoga Cup, 1 3-4 miles are: George Smith Ed Weiss Black Toney Achievement Ormesdale Ed Crump !/• Bay The Finn Dtefc Williams Stromboli Iron Duke Pandean Friar Bock Half Bock Celandria St. Bock Thunderer Watercress II.
