GOOD BEGINNING AT BOWIE FAST TRACK, FINE WEATHER AND CLOSE FINISHES PLEASE A BIG CROWD. Fair Helen Proves the Winner of the Inaugural Handicap in a Close Finish with Redland — Track Gossip. Bowie, M 1.. April I. — The Inaugural Handicap. which was offered as the stellar feature of a seven- race curd at the Bowie course this afternoon re- suited in a stirring finish in which Fair Helen lasted long enough to he returned the winner over Kcdland, with Flittergold third. Summerlike weather prevailed and an immense throng welcomed hack the sport. Well balanced fields took part in all the races, there heing few withdrawals during the day. The majority of the winners were returned after hard drives. The public had a good line on the starters and the winners were well supported. A field of six engaged in the feature race and, while on the way to the post. Republican ran away for a mile and three-quarters. The others were dispatched alter a slight delay and Fair Helen was the one to set the pace, with Judge Wright and Flittergold in close pursuit. Through the final sixteenth the winner was tiring rapidly and would have been beaten in another stride or two. In Hie ::bseneo of William Snyder, who is officiating at Hot Springs as starter, his place as one of starter Dades assistants was filled by Frank McGinty. Jockey W. Schamerhorn was suspended for six days for disobedience while at the post. .lames T. Woodward, president of the Hanover National Hank of Prince Georges County, headed a tallyho party which drove over from his beautiful estate to Howie to witness the opening of the racing season in Maryland. In the party were J. Searle Barclay anil Q. A. Cochran. fount Backmeteff. the Russian ambassador, occupied one of the boxes. Senator Ollie James and Samuel Ross also came over from Washington to witness the spurt. Jockey E. Ambrose announced that lie would report to trainer Henry McDaniel. who lias the Thorn-el iffe Stable horses at Woodbine, about ten days before the Toronto meeting Iiegins. Frank Onrrett is looking after Ambroses engagements at Bowie. John Powers and G. R. Bryson located at the Havre de Grace track. Their horses shipped well from Havana and Powers will point Harry Shaw for the Havre de Grace meeting. The big string that J. O. Talbott wintered at Palmetto Park. Charleston, readied Havre de Grace this afternoon. There were fifteen in the string. Ceorge R. Bryson stopped off at Charleston on his way north and looked over the horses that wintered at the Charleston track. He reports that the Tal-Uitt horses appeared to be in particularly good condition. The Kentucky Stables English two-year-olds were shipped to Kentucky a few days ago. W. B. Jennings will remain at Charleston for a couple of weeks longer, as also will Fd Trotter. Before H leaving Cuba Mr. Bryson disposed of Sepulveda and Lady Bankin to Senor Muriel Bevilla for breeding purposes. Senor Bevilla also purchased Prince Chap and the mares Maryland Girl, Finisher, Nanette, l.aura Burn and Evelyn C. Earl of Savoy, which broke down at Oriental Park, was left in Cuba in charge of T. Cheek, who will remain there all summer. Judge Fred Keruochan. Congressman Peter J. Pooling. Congressman Griffin and Captain Alexander, V. S. A., were interested spectators. The selling race men evidently propose to make things lively at the meeting. After Between Is won the second race, lie was put from 00 1o 81.105 by lewis Garth ami bought in. Between h In trained by J. F. Richardson, who also trained the three-year-old Candle for J. Luiusden. Candle was claimed from Mr. Garth in Canada last summer by A. C. Parretto, who afterwards sold the colt to Mr. Lumsden. Richardson trained the horse for Parretto and when Lumsden purchased tiie colt he employed Richardson as trainer. The owners stabled at Kenning have succeeded in having the dockers barred from the course, consequently race-goers have but little line on the horses quartered there. Kimball Patterson, who has Madame Herrmann and Nonesuch at Havre de Crace, reports that the track has liocn thrown epM to trainers and is in excellent condition. The mutuel machines used at Laurel have lieeii transferred to Havre de Grace and aliout ten of them are already in place. The rear of the betting enclosure has been boarded up and Manager Edward Burke promises to have everything in leadings for the opening. After winning the fifth race Bustling Brass ran away two and a quarter miles with little laihftf . Finally the lad grew tired and jumped oft and the horse then stopped of his own accord.
