FAVORITES FARE POORLY STOUT HEART HAS BAD LUCK AND ONLY FINISHES THIRD IN THE MAIN RACE. Ratina Regains Her Speed and Wins Easily from Bevelry James — Hot Springs Attendance Falls Off as the End Nears. Hot Springs. Ark.. April 1. — The talent and supposedly smart brigade suffered extensively this afternoon through the repeated failures of the horses they supported confidently. About the worst setback incurred came when Stout Heart failed to land better than third to Jack Reeves and Osaple in what was regarded as the feature race of the afternoon. Stout Hearts defeat was in the main due to severe interference encountered during the first quarter of the race. The start in this race was a bad one, with Carrie Orme and Rose Point practically left. The latter displayed a high order of speed and lief ore the first quarter had been traversed she was leading by nearly five lengths. It was when she moved into the lead that the first jam came that knocked Stout Heart back and Warrington aggravated the incident by taking her back sharply to last place. Later he went wide and closed a big gap in the stretch racing, but Jack Reeves, the extreme outsider, fought it out with Osaple and scored by a neck. Ratina, which in her last previous start ran a dull race, ran to her best form this afternoon and scored over Bevelry James. After the finish she was advanced from an entered price of §400 to §70.r , but was liought in. H. Fink, owner of Bevelry James, did the bidding and owner E. Cook retaliated by claiming Bevelry James for 75. Lyndora and Industry were the preferred ones for the second race, but both were taken into camp by Glomer and Theresa McMakiu. Lyndora was best in the race, but Obert gave her a bad ride and Industry quit before going a half mile. Cashups showing this afternoon was an improvement over his previous recent races and he accounted for the opener. Jockey Haynes has been engaged to ride for A. C. Parretto for the year and will leave for Bowie tomorrow. Harry Frisco Gardner will, at the close of the racing here, leave with a party for Tijuana and book at the meeting beginning there April 15. Pedro and Dr. Mack were this afternoon shipped to Texarkana, Texas, where they will rest for some time and later will lie campaigned at fair meetings. There is some talk of a ten -days meeting at Helena. Ark., shortly, but few owners here are giving the matter much consideration. A light shower fell before the horses went to the post for the fifth race, but it did not affect the track. Only twenty-four "information" men were in line during the afternoon and there was a noticeable decrease in the attendance, due to the heavy exodus from here during the last few days. Jockey J. Mason was suspended for the remainder of the meeting for rough riding, he being charged with the interference that Stout Heart met. The losing dash went to La Mode after she had almost been knocked down on the first turn and apparently seemed a hopeless proposition. She came away to win as her rider pleased and was bid up from .00 to 05 after the finish and bought in. Scallywag was claimed for S575 by E. Cook and Balgee was taken for the same price by George Moore. Training gallops this morning over a fast track were : Ailsa Paige — Five-eighths in 1:04. Altamuha— Three-eighths in 39.
