WHEN CHRIS FITZGERALD WAS STARTEK. When Hibler won the Grand National Steeplechase at Belmont Park last week in the colors of Mrs. F. Ambrose Clark. Chris Fitzgerald and Billy Hayes met in the paddock and recalled the first running at Morris Park in 1S99 with many a laugh. Fitzgerald was the starter, and Hayes had the mount on his own horse Trillion, and spoiled a couple of starts by pulling up. Ill fine you 0 if you do that again:" shouted Fitz, but Hayes never looked up. and the next moment repeated the offense, because he was not satisfied with his position. "Youre fined 00." bawled Fitz. and this time he got an auswer. "It cant be done. Mr. Fitz; Ive got only 5 in the bank, and. anyway, you said 0 a minute ago." Then Trillion went on and won. earning 1916.sh,150 for Mr. Hayes, to say nothing of a goodly wager. "How about the fine?" somebody asked. "You had plenty of money in the bank next day." To this Mr. Hayes replied; "Oh, Fitz remitted that; sometimes his bark was worse than his bite."
