AUSTRIAN DERBY WINNERS DAM IN DOUBT. There now seems to be some doubt as to the identity of La Sage, the dam of Baron A. de Rothschilds Austrian Derby winner Sanskrit. It has been stated that La Sage is a mare by Jeddah out of Sagitta, and this no doubt is perfectly correct. The question, however, is which mare by Jeddah out of Sagitta is the dam of Sanskit. for there were no fewer than three own sisters out of Sagitta foaled in consecutive seasons. Some .authorities have given the credit of producing Sanskrit to the filly 1904 by Jeddah out of Sagitta. That filly, however, was sold as a two-year-old at the December Sales to M. des Forts for 200 guineas, and she went to France, where she was known as Countess La Fleclie. For M. des Forts she produced several foals across the channel. Her sister 1905 was also sold at the December Sales as a two-year-old, and was purchased for 300 guineas by Captain Bauer, and, curiously enough, the third sister foaled in 1900 was also sold for 300 guineas in the December of two-year-old season, falling to the bid of Mr. R. G. lleaton. It seems unlikely that the oldest of the three unnamed daughters of Sagitta, after being named Countess La Fleclie in France, would have been renamed La Sage, and it is likely enough that Sanskrits dam is one of the two younger daughters of Jeddah and Sagitta, especially as the purchaser of the filly foaled in 1905 was either a German or an Austrian. Captain Bauer. The question of identity can easily be settled, but the mix-up, if mixup it is would have been avoided had here been a rule in this country making it compulsory to name all thoroughbreds before running. All the three fillies ran at two years of age, the one foaled in 1901 taking part in three races, the one foaled in 1905 in one, and the 1900 filly in no fewer than ten events.
