After a months absence the thoroughbreds wens again in action on a New Vork track today when Belmont Park opened its gates for the- autumn meeting of the Westchester Racing Association. The weather was ideal for racing and a fair-sized crowd was on hand. The fields in the majority of the races were smaller than at Saratoga, but the finishes were keenly contested. The feature event of the day was the Belmont Park Autumn Handicap at one mile and an eighth, in which a small field went to the post. August Belmonts Stromboli accounted for this race and thereby duplicated one of his victories of last I year. The race was worth ,100 net. Stromboli always ruled the public choice ai.d his victory was a popular one. Capra made the pace until in the final quarter, when J. McTnggart sent the Belmont horse along anil, after a brif drive, easily passed fapra to win going away by two lengths. The imported horse Frizzle was a beaten o.T third and Short Crass was fourth. The feature of the opening race was the meeting of the purely representative type of American sprinters in I.eochares with the lieavv. couch v French type in Mont dOr II. The hitter was considered one of the fastest sprinters on the French turf, but ho was decisively outrun todav !v Leo-chares, which scored his second victorv for Mr. Sanford this year. Mr. Sanford purchased this: son of Broomstick at the auction sale of the .1. W. Schorr hort-os at Saratoga last summer. Martian was added in the Jtrondhollnw Steeplechase Handicap and proved the winner after a hard drive through the rinal eighth with Skibbcrt after the latter had made the early pace. The event was worth ,1:511 to the winner and it was due chiefly to the excellent finish that V. Powers rode, that this sum was credited to 11. AV. Sage, owner of Martian. Jockey Koscoe Troxler, who rode with sucess during the Saratoga meeting has received several offers to ride for prominent stables as a result, lie has not decided as yet with whom he will sign, but for the remainder of the eastern racing season he has given first, second and third calls respectively to Samuel Boss and W.
