LEXINGTONS FINE OPENING ALL CONDITIONS FAVORABLE ON THE FIRST DAY OF KENTUCKY FALL RACING. Killanna Wins the Phoenix Hotel Handicap in Easy Fashion Favorites Prove Deceivers All Through the Afternoon. Lexington, Ky., September 0. Tlie Kentucky Association commenced its ten days of fall racing tliis afternoon in auspicious fashion, a goodly attendance of representative character being on hand to witness the decision of seven excellent contests. The speculative element fared poorly, for their selections met with repeated failure. The feature offering, the Phoenix Hotel Handicap, at one mile and an eighth, went to K. B. Brad-leys recent Irish-bred acquisition Killanna. which showed herself to be much above the ordinary by the impressive fashion in which she disposed of good opposition to win easily sifter leading for the entire way. Her ierforinanee this afternoon makes her loom up as a serious factor in all the longdistance stakes and purses that she will try for on the Kentucky courses next fall. Othello was the disappointment in the opening dash in which he met. some fairly good ones. The winner turned up in Dimitri, which led all the way. Kor the second. Injury was favorite. Like Othello he failed to run to a place, Murjorie I, turning up as the winner. Hawthorn and llocnir were given the call in the third and again disappointment wis in store for the talent, for Mars Cassidy, ridden by C. Tudor, having his first mount, won easily. Saffron Girl was the favored one for the fiftli but The Baroness got a big bulge at the start by u iuick beginning and raced into what proved to be a winning lead in the first quarter. After the finish of the third race, llocnir was claimed by .1. JS. Goodman for ,000. The recently-enacted rule of the Kentucky State Racing Commission pertaining to selling races, requiring sealed bids on the winner and to be opened by the secretary fifteen minutes after each race, was put into effect here this afternoon. Harry Kink became active at once, for he made a bid of ,000 on Dimitri, and followed in the next race with a bid of 800 for Marjorio , I., but failed to get either, their owners advancing the offers in each instance and retaining their horses. Fink also put in a claim for Anna ICrutt-r in the initial race, but invalidated it by failing to put in .-110, the necessary amount required to claim the filly. Fink only deposited .1110. Todays visitors included General AA. I!. Hable-innii, member of the Kentucky State Bat-big Commission, and Walter II. IVnree. They motored over from Louisville for the opening. E. It. Bradley stated this afternoon that lie was desirous of becoming the owner of Friar Rock and had offered John E. Madden an advance over the price the latter paid August I.elmont for the horse. The crack youngster Buford. owned by II. I. ! Hoadley, arrived today from I.elmont. Iark and will be turned out for the year.
