BELMONT PARK RACING RATHER TAME. Vivid Takes the Champagne Stakes Chielot Defeats Flittergold in a Close Finish. New York, September 0. This was a day of ordinary racing at. Belmont Bark. The fields were small and short -priced favorites ruled. Then; are upwards of 1.00! horses here, and the smallness of the fields can be ascribed partly to the conditions of the races and partly to the disinclination of many trainers to race the reverse way of tiie course. The Champagne Stakes, worth ,455, was contested by two starters. Vivid and AVoodtrap, the former being added when Straight Forward and Mary Powell were withdrawn. It. resulted in an easy victory for Vivid, quoted at prohibitive odds. This event has formerly attracted good fields and resulted in excellent contests, as it is the first race at seven-eighths for two-year-olds in the east, and the poor contention in todays running was a disappointment to many. Harvest King, another pronounced choice, made good easily in the second race, after several of the presumptive contenders were withdrawn. It was noticeable, that in this race the two-year-olds raced straighter and truer than in any two-year-old raca of the meeting. Opinion was divided between Vermont and Old Broom in the third race, but the former proved easily the best, after leading all the way. The horses of James Butler will be sent to Havre de Grace Sunday. Interest in the meeting of Roamer and Stromboh Saturday is apparent on all sides and both horses will have many backers. The Kentucky Stable has shipped its ten horses to Havre de Grace from Saratoga. The attendance today was smaller thau usual, but the lawn contingent was of good size. Harry Shaw pulled up lame after his race yesterday and trainer John Powers stated he did not know vet just how serious the horses injury might be. The sixth race- was really the best race or the lav. it being a handicap at one mile, with six well-matched starters accepting. It resulted in a stirring finish between Chiclet and Flittergold, the former winning in the last nod. Both horses were perfectly ridden. ; i ! i i I . l . - 1 1 i i s ,
