WOLAROI WINS THE VICTORIA DERBY. The 5,000 Victoria Derby was run over the famous Flemington track in Australia, Saturday, November 4. and was won in slow going by Wolaroi, Melii King second and Eastcourt third in 2:42. Tte result was yet another triumph for St. Simon blood, the winner, AValaroi, being by Kenilworth Widden Lass. Kenilworth, which stood eleventh in the list of winning stallions at the end of the Australian racing year last July, is an im- ported horse by Childwick son of St. Simon and Plaisanterie out of the French Oaks winner, Kizil Kourgan, and he was bred by M. de St. Alary. Wolaroi is a black colt, and as a two-year-old he won four races out of seven, inclusive of the Australian Jockey Club Champagne Stakes, and the Sires Produce Stakes at the Victoria Racing Club Meeting in March. He belongs to Mr. D. U. Sea-ton, a well-known New South Wales owner, who last season was second in the list of winning owners to Mrs. E. A. Widdis. In addition to the Victoria Derby winner, Mr. Seaton is tho owner also of Eastcourt, which finished third, the pair being split by Mr. II. J. Robinsons Mehi King. The last-named is a son of Mountain King, which is by the champion Australion stallion. Wallace, and Eastcourt is a son of imported Earlston, a sire which won good races for Mr. J. B. Joel during his turf career. Wolaroi was a well-backed horse, starting at 7 to 1 against. The race was run in the slowest time for the last sixteen years, and compares unfavorably indeed with the 2:37 of latrobas of a year ago. Much, however, depends on the conditions, and it may be pointed out that in 1900 it took the winner, Malster, 2:48, yet he won the Australian Jockey Club Derby, alfeo a mile and a half race, in only a fraction over 2:39.
