I TRIUMPH FOR SCIENTIFIC BREEDING. One of the most scientific breeders of thoroughbreds during the present century undoubtedly is Lord DAbernon, who for many years past has made a careful study of the subject. Years ago I strongly advocated his mating Donnetta with the stallion Littleton, on the ground that the mare was by Donovan, and that another Donovan mare in Theale had produced Throwaway winner of the Gold Cup at Ascot and Chuckaway a Liverpool Cup winner to Littletons sire, Right Away. Lord DAbernon, however, preferred to follow his own idea that Littleton was not of sufficiently good class, and after trying St. Frusquin with only mediocre results, lie eventually selected Orby as the most suitable mate for both Donnetta and her five-eighths sister, Renaissance. His judgment was completely vindicated, for to Orby, Donnetta threw Diadumenos Liverpool Cup, Jubilee and other good ir.ces and Diadem, winner of the New "Coventry" and other high-class events, inclusive of the Moulton Stakes. Eos is the result of mating Renaissance with Orby, and how easily the filly won this years Cambridgeshire is now a matter of history. She was undoubtedly the best class three-year-old In the race, even better than Julian, which was asked to give her three pounds over and above the sex allowance, but in common with many good judges I was of opinion that the nine furlongs would prove beyond her measure, although she had previously won a good race over the Bunbury mile, with its uphill finish. In selecting Orby to be mated with Donnetta and Renaissance. Lord DAbernon has veritably achieved a triumph, Diadumenos and Diadem affording ample testimony to that effect in the case of Donnetta and Eos in regard to Renaissance. To my mind, tho leading feature in the successful combination of Orby and Renaissance is that it brings in the meeting of Angelica and her brother, St. Simon. This means returning to Eoss sire, Orby, the best strains in his sire, i. e., doubling the blood of Galopin and St. Angela, the sire and dam respectively of Angelica and her brother St. Simon. In the same way one gets a return of Stockwell blood and that of his brother, Rataplan, through Renaissance, to nick with the double strain of Don-caster in Orby, and there is no doubt that the doubling of either the St. Simon blend of the inbreeding to Stockwell may have had a good deal to do with the excellence of Eos. In view of the fact that Donnetta dam of Diadem and Diadumenos brought in only Galopin sire of St. Simon to meet Angelica, I am of opinion that it is the doubling of Galopin which lias been the main factor in the successes achieved by Lord DAbernon s three good winners.
