WHERE ALL HEN ARE EQUAL. A note in a London newspapers report of the funeral of "Danny" Maher recognizes the sentiment that makes racing universal and enduring: An ex-Prime Minister of Great Britain attending as one of the mourners and walking side by side with a jockey and a poor old cardseller bringing a bunch of violets in remembrance of past kindness. Quite an object lesson to the Philistines who think there is nothing in racing but a bet at starting-price. They have never seen a millionaire leading in the Derby winner and looking, as if the world had nothing more to give him.
